I have rejuvenated one of my blogs to track impressions, clicks and sales for all the banner Ads on the site.

The way it works is to randomly rotate banner ads that are non-standard size so they are looking like normal content enhancements. So every impression is logged in a database. Then every click is also counted. Also, the click url from each banner is customized with a tracking ID so I can detect which banner produced a sale.

When I say “banner” I mean graphical image Ad.

Also, I record every raw click i.e. I record more detailed information such as the visitor’s IP address, referring URL and the time of the click.

For the banner impressions, I also block my own IP address from being counted and try to filter out bots so my data is as accurate as I can make it for real visitors.

Finally, I made a report page that easily lets me see the performance of all the Ads in terms of Impressions, Clicks and CTR. In the affiliate sales reports, I will see the Tracking IDs.

So this method should help me easily identify which Ads work best and the revenue produced from traffic to the Ads.
