Become an Affiliate Marketer
You either join an affiliate network such as Commission Junction or apply to be an affiliate of a company whose products you would like to promote.
In most cases, your website will be looked at to see if it is acceptable by the affiliate program manager. They are looking for a well designed site containing relevant content to associate their brand with.
Once you are accepted into the affiliate program, you can start promoting your affiliate link. I am not going to talk much about paying for clicks on this site since I am much more interested in free traffic.
So you can promote your link via banner Ads, text Ads, reviews, videos and via email for example. As your link is exposed to people a certain percentage will click on the link. This gives us something we can measure called the click-through ratio (CTR).
As affiliate marketers, we try and maximize the CTR of our Ads. We also try and maximize the traffic to the Ads.
Another factor to consider is matching our visitor traffic to the products we are advertising. We need to have related content on our website so our visitor traffic is targeted to the products being advertised.
So, to make the most money as an affiliate, we want to advertise products with a high level of commission, products that are in demand by our visitors, maximize CTR of our Ads and maximize our visitor traffic.
A further consideration is how good is the sales conversion of the site you send your leads to? And, how effective is the advertising materials they give you?
Sell a Product
Obviously the web is a huge market place of online shoppers so it makes sense to tap into it by selling your own product.
But first you need to create a product. This starts with an idea and you either make this product yourself or outsource the work.
Factors affecting profits here include cost of product development, market demand and profit margin. You want to cover your initial costs as soon as possible and be in profit as soon as possible with minimum downside risk so you can suffer a setback without going out of business.
The most profitable products will cost nothing to make, have a big profit margin, require no customer support and be in high demand. An example would be the best selling marketing e-Book on the web, whatever that might be at the time.
A bad example would be a self-assemble grandfather clock kit. Can you imagine the sales support nightmare this might involve? How to fix this to that, the missing crucial part etc?
Once you have a product, you need to have a sales page, a source of traffic to the sales page and possibly affiliates.
Your sales page needs to turn visitors into buyers, so the sales copy will need to compel them to buy. The writing of the sales letter is known as Copy Writing. The effectiveness of the sales page can be measured as its conversion rate.
Next you will generate traffic to your sales page. This is usually your home page which is most important in search engine ranking of your web site. To avoid compromising the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of the home page, it is better to have a separate web site to generate traffic from search engines.
There are many other ways to get traffic to your sales page such as from affiliates, article submission, directories and viral methods.
Observations
A few things come out from this discussion that are important for making money from the Internet:
- You must own a website
- You need highly profitable, in-demand products
- You need large amounts of targeted visitor traffic to your website
